How to Use GAB Drug Test Strips:

Tricyclic Antidepressant (TCA) Drug Test Strips Instructions

GAB Drug Test Instructions:

  1. Remove the Gabapentin (GAB) test strip from its sealed pouch and use it as soon as possible. For best results, perform the test within an hour.
  2. Next, hold the test by the end, where you can see the product name. To avoid contamination, do not touch the test membrane.
  3. Then, holding the test vertically, dip the test in the urine specimen for at least 10-15 seconds. Do not immerse above the maximum line (MAX) on the test. That’s about 1/5th of the way up the test.
  4. After the drug test has finished, remove the test from the specimen and place it on a non-absorbent flat surface. Start the timer and wait for the colored band(s) to appear. Read the result at 5 minutes. Do not interpret it after 10 minutes.

How to Read A Gabapentin (GAB) Test?

Drug Test Strips Positive Result

If only one colored band appears in the control region (C) and no apparent colored band appears in the test region (T) the test is positive.

Drug Test Strips Negative Result

Negative

If two colored bands appear on the membrane test is negative. One brand appears in the control region (C) and another band appears in the test region (T).

Drug Test Strips Invalid Result

Invalid

If control band fails to appear on any test at the specified read time, the test must be discarded. Please review the procedure and repeat steps with a new test. However, if the problems persist, discontinue using the kit immediately and contact us.

What Is Gabapentin?

Gabapentin is a prescription anticonvulsant medication commonly known by the brand name Neurontin. Gabapentin is available in a pill, capsule, and oral solution form.  This drug has also been used to treat epilepsy and postherpetic neuralgia.

By decreasing abnormal activity in the brain, Gabapentin can prevent seizures and muscle spasms. Also, it may alter how the body reacts to pain signals.

Though Gabapentin is not an opioid, it has been known to enhance the effects of other opioids when taken.  It is for this reason that gabapentin use may need to be monitored by a medical professional

Forensic use only – This device is intended solely for use in employment and insurance testing and does not include test systems intended for Federal drug testing programs (e.g., programs run by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Department of Transportation (DOT), and the U.S. military.

Is Gabapentin a Controlled Substance?

The classification of gabapentin varies depending on its location:

  • United States – Gabapentin is not classified under the Controlled Substances Act at the federal level. However, some states like Kentucky and Michigan list it as a “Schedule V drug,” meaning it’s available for medical use but carries a low potential for abuse.
  • Other Regions – Similar variance can be found in other countries. It’s worth noting that policymakers are increasingly evaluating whether gabapentin requires stricter control.

Despite not being a federally controlled substance in the U.S., its potential for misuse has raised concerns in substance abuse clinics and healthcare circles.

Why Test for Gabapentin?

Gabapentin side effects have been known to be varied.  The misuse of the drug has caused some to feel effects such as feelings of euphoria and enhanced sociability.

This has led to a rise in the misuse of gabapentin. Because gabapentin isn’t a controlled substance, it’s fairly easy for people who misuse the drug to get it.

What Is Gabapentin Used For?

Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant medication primarily prescribed for two key purposes:

  1. Managing Nerve Pain – It provides relief from chronic nerve pain caused by conditions such as shingles (postherpetic neuralgia) or diabetic neuropathy.
  2. Epilepsy Treatment – Gabapentin works as a supplementary therapy to help control seizures in patients diagnosed with epilepsy.

However, its “off-label” uses also include managing anxiety, migraines, and insomnia. Despite these benefits, the increased use of gabapentin has drawn attention to its potential for misuse.

Is Gabapentin Addictive?

Gabapentin is not traditionally associated with addiction in the way opioids or stimulants are, but misuse is on the rise:

  • Risk of Misuse – People may misuse gabapentin to amplify the effects of opioids or alcohol, or to achieve feelings of relaxation or mild euphoria.
  • Dependence – Extended use of gabapentin without professional oversight may lead to physical or psychological dependence.
  • Withdrawal Symptoms – Discontinuing gabapentin abruptly can cause withdrawal symptoms, including anxiety, nausea, and insomnia.

Thus, gabapentin addiction is often contextual, emerging more prominently in patients combining it with other substances.

How Long Does Gabapentin Stay in Your System?

Understanding how long gabapentin remains detectable in the body helps determine its monitoring requirements:

  • Half-Life – Gabapentin has a relatively short half-life of 5-7 hours in healthy individuals.
  • Urine Test Detection – It can be detected in urine for up to 2-3 days post-consumption using specialized gabapentin drug test strips.
  • Other Factors – Variables such as age, dosage, kidney function, and the combination with other substances can influence how long gabapentin stays in the system.

Healthcare professionals often rely on gabapentin urine tests to screen for compliance or potential misuse, especially in environments like pain management clinics or substance abuse centers.

GAB Drug Test Strips: Why They’re Essential

Gabapentin urine tests have become crucial tools in clinical settings. Here’s why:

  1. Targeted Screening – Conventional drug tests don’t typically include gabapentin. Dedicated GAB drug test strips make it easy to specifically monitor gabapentin usage.
  2. Efficient Monitoring – These strip tests provide quick and highly accurate results, enabling healthcare providers to monitor treatment adherence or detect possible misuse.
  3. Applicability – Ideal for use in pain management programs, substance abuse clinics, and employment drug screenings where gabapentin monitoring is relevant.

For instance, gabapentin urine tests can reveal whether patients are using the medication as prescribed or mixing it with other potentially harmful substances.

Why Healthcare Professionals Should Incorporate Gabapentin Testing

Given the increasing concerns about gabapentin misuse, testing serves as an invaluable tool:

  • Pain Management Patients – Ensures patients are adhering to prescribed treatment regimens.
  • Substance Abuse Clinics – Detects whether gabapentin has been misused alongside other substances.
  • Employment Drug Testing – Expands workplace screenings to include gabapentin, particularly when it’s relevant to job safety.

With GAB test strips now widely available, clinics and organizations can identify risks before they affect patient health or workplace safety.

Why Does My Tracking Info Still Say "Label Created, Not yet in the System" When I Placed It X Days Ago?

If your order was placed via USPS, sometimes your label might not show up in their system even 1-3 days after they have received the package. The same can happen for UPS orders, although they almost always show up in their system the night which they are shipped. If you have any questions regarding the status of your order, please contact us and we will investigate the matter.

If I Pay for a next Day Air Delivery, Am I Guaranteed to Receive It the next Day?

Air deliveries performed by UPS are counted via business days, so you will receive your package the business day after it has been shipped. We also do not ship orders placed after 4 pm EST on the same day, so Next Day orders placed after 4 pm will be shipped the following business day.

Why Can't I Check the Tracking of My Package?

After you place your order, an email will be sent to you with the tracking number within a business day. If you did not receive this email, it’s possible that the e-mail was entered incorrectly, sent to your spam folder, or blocked. If you did not receive this email, please call or email us and we’ll be happy to give you the status of your shipment.

I Placed My Order but I No Longer Need It. Can I Return It and Get a Refund?

We accept returns for unused items as long as they are placed within 30 days after the day they are purchased. Although shipping is free upon order, we still incur a cost for every order that is shipped, and you will be refunded the amount of your order once we receive the returned goods, minus the cost of shipping.
