What Is Propoxyphene?
Propoxyphene is an opioid pain reliever that was sold under brand names such as Darvon® and Darvocet®. The FDA asked manufacturers to withdraw it from the U.S. market on November 19, 2010, because it could cause dangerous heart rhythm problems at normal doses. It was also withdrawn in Europe, Canada and several other countries.
Why Test for Propoxyphene?
Although propoxyphene is no longer prescribed in the U.S., some drug testing programs, contracts and legacy panels still include PPX, and old supplies or products obtained outside the U.S. can still circulate. A single-panel PPX card lets you meet those requirements affordably.
How to Use the Propoxyphene Dip Card
- Remove the dip card from the sealed foil pouch and take off the cap.
- Dip the exposed test strip into the urine sample for 10–15 seconds.
- Allow the urine to migrate up the test strip.
- Replace the cap and lay the dip card flat on a clean, dry, non-absorbent surface.
- Read the results at 5 minutes. Do not read after 10 minutes.
How to Read Propoxyphene Dip Card Results
Positive
Only one colored line appears, in the control region (C). No line appears in the test region (T). This means propoxyphene was detected at or above 300 ng/mL.
Negative
Two colored lines appear: one in the control region (C) and one in the test region (T). Any line in the T region, even a very faint one, counts as negative.
Invalid
No line appears in the control region (C). Discard the result and repeat the test with a new dip card. If the problem persists, stop using the lot and contact 12 Panel Now.

No. The FDA requested its withdrawal from the U.S. market on November 19, 2010, after data showed it could cause serious heart rhythm abnormalities even at typical doses. Europe, Canada, New Zealand and other countries also removed it from their markets.

The PPX test is designed to detect propoxyphene. Other opioids such as morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl and methadone require their own tests. Refer to the package insert for any compounds that may cross-react.
